Maybe You’re Not Negative. Maybe You’re Just Tired of Carrying Too Much.
“Sometimes positivity isn't about adding something beautiful to your life. Maybe it's about finally putting something heavy down. You don't have to carry everything you've survived into everything you're becoming.”
We have this funny idea about positivity. Smile. Be grateful. Think better thoughts. Keep your chin up. As though life were a stubborn jar of pickles and the right attitude was all it took to get the lid off. Sometimes, though, you aren't negative. You're tired. There is a difference. You are carrying an argument that ended months ago, a disappointment you keep picking at, a person you still hope will become the person you needed them to be. You carry old guilt. Old expectations. Old versions of yourself. Then you wonder why there isn't much room left for joy. Maybe positivity isn't always about adding something beautiful to your life. Maybe it's about finally putting something heavy down. Listen before you answer. Stop rehearsing your defense while somebody else is talking. Say the difficult thing kindly. Notice patterns. And please, for your own sake, stop explaining yourself to people who have already decided not to understand you.

I have had to learn that one the uncomfortable way. I have held onto questions long after the answers stopped mattering. I wanted explanations. I wanted certain people to understand what I meant, what I felt, what I had given. I thought if I could just explain it one more time—better this time, clearer this time—something would click. It didn't. Eventually I realized I was standing at the same locked door, knocking harder, as if volume could manufacture an invitation. Sometimes closure is not something another person gives you. Sometimes it is the quiet decision to stop asking. That doesn't mean you stop caring. It doesn't mean what happened didn't hurt. It means you refuse to keep handing yesterday the keys to tomorrow. You can love someone and still leave. Forgive someone and still have boundaries. Miss something and know, with surprising certainty, that you don't want it back. Those aren't contradictions. That's being human.

And here is the part I wish more people said out loud: positivity can have teeth. It can say, “No.” It can say, “That hurt.” It can say, “I was wrong.” It can say, “I deserve to be treated differently.” Kindness does not require self-abandonment. Forgiveness does not require unlimited access. Being a good person does not mean volunteering to be repeatedly wounded by the same person, the same habit, the same excuse. You don't have to become hard to protect your heart. You just have to become honest about what belongs in your life. Keep your sense of humor. Keep your curiosity. Keep looking for the little sparks—the ridiculous laugh, the unexpected kindness, the morning light across the kitchen floor. Those things matter. But so does walking away when walking away is what makes room for them. Sometimes the next positive chapter doesn't begin with a grand transformation. Sometimes it begins with one small, almost invisible act of courage: you put something down, take a breath, and decide not to pick it up again.
Have a wonderfully positive day! ☀️
