I’M NOT INTERESTED IN POSITIVITY THAT REQUIRES ME TO PRETEND I’M NOT HURTING. There. I said it. I don’t want the polished version—the permanent smile, the cheerful quote pasted over a cracked heart, the bullshit idea that strong people somehow float above disappointment. I want something real. Something that can look at me on the worst day, when I’m angry, tired, disappointed, or missing pieces of myself, and say, Get up. We’re not done yet. I’ve had days when I felt completely together and days when I felt like someone dumped my pieces onto the floor and walked away. Positivity isn’t pretending those pieces aren’t there. It’s picking them up. Again. And again. Maybe with shaking hands. I can hurt and still have hope. I can be disappointed and still be grateful. I can have a miserable Tuesday without declaring my entire life miserable. One bad chapter doesn’t get to hijack the whole damn book.

Staying positive isn’t always sunshine, deep breaths, and inspirational quotes slapped over an ugly reality. Sometimes positivity is brutally honest. It’s admitting I’m part of the problem. It’s catching myself replaying an old argument as if I’m finally going to win it. It’s recognizing when resentment has stopped protecting me and started poisoning me. It’s letting go of the person, situation, or story I keep dragging behind me because I confused holding on with being strong. I’ve done that. So I’ve learned to ask a harder question: Is this helping me heal, or am I just getting really good at carrying pain? Ouch. That one gets me. Sometimes positivity is gratitude. Sometimes forgiveness. Sometimes it’s a boundary. Sometimes it’s turning off the phone, taking a long walk, calling someone who makes me laugh, or refusing to argue with somebody who isn’t even in the room. Positivity isn’t weakness. It takes guts to choose kindness when bitterness would be easier.

I don’t want to become endlessly cheerful. No thanks. I want to become resilient without becoming hard. I want disappointment to hurt without letting it define me. I want enough hope that rejection doesn’t become a verdict, enough humility to say, “I was wrong,” and enough humor to laugh when life gets ridiculous—which it frequently does. I don’t need every missing piece returned before I live. I don’t need all the answers before I enjoy today. I can be unfinished and still be worthy. Bruised and still loving. Lost and still moving. Some days, positivity might be nothing more glamorous than getting out of bed and deciding, Not today. You don’t get to break me today. Then I step outside. I notice the trees. I breathe. I laugh at something stupid. I love somebody. I begin again. That’s my kind of positivity—not a fake smile over a broken heart, but a stubborn little spark that refuses to die. Life doesn’t have to be perfect for me to believe it’s still worth showing up for.

Have a wonderfully positive day! ☀️
