Every now and then, usually when I’m driving somewhere with no particular reason to hurry, I think about all the life I haven’t encountered yet. People whose names I don’t know. Roads I haven’t turned onto. A little restaurant in a town I’ve never heard of. A mountain I haven’t climbed. A ridiculous conversation with somebody who, today, is a complete stranger and someday might be one of those people I can’t imagine my life without. Even the future versions of me are still strangers. There’s a braver Russell in there somewhere. A softer one, probably. Maybe a wiser one. I hope so. And then I wonder how many times I’ve made the mistake of treating one difficult chapter like it was the entire book. Too many. More than I’d like to admit. When something hurts long enough, the present has a nasty habit of pretending it is permanent.

I don’t buy the idea that staying positive means walking around with a grin plastered on my face while life is kicking me in the shins. No. Sometimes things hurt. Sometimes people disappoint the hell out of us. Sometimes you lose something you desperately wanted to keep, and there is no inspirational quote that can make you feel better that afternoon. I think real positivity is much less pretty than that. It is being able to say, "*This hurts*," without deciding, "*This is all there is.*" It is crying and still getting up the next morning. It is being angry without becoming cruel. It is allowing disappointment to sit beside gratitude instead of letting it evict gratitude altogether. I’ve learned that I don’t have to call a bad day a good day to remain hopeful. I just have to resist turning a bad day into a prophecy. That distinction has saved me more than once.

Maybe that’s why I keep coming back to this thought: ***I haven’t met all of my life yet.*** I like the uncertainty of it. There are still people who will surprise me. Places that will stop me in my tracks. Songs I haven’t heard at exactly the right moment. Trails where I’ll be tired, sweaty, probably complaining about the last uphill section—and then I’ll reach the top and shut up because, damn, look at that view. There will be ordinary days that mean absolutely nothing when they happen and everything years later when I remember them. There will be grief, too. More change. More things I won't get to control. That's life. But there will also be laughter I haven't laughed, kindness I haven't received, kindness I haven't given, and moments I couldn't possibly plan for. So I’m trying not to rush past the uncertainty. I’m trying to leave a little room for wonder. Because I have no idea what is waiting around the next corner. And honestly, I’m glad I don’t.

Have a wonderfully positive day! ☀️
