- Description: "Sometimes you don’t need to change your attitude—you need to take a harder look at who you allow into your life. The people closest to us shape our internal soundtrack. Choose people who bring honesty, kindness, laughter, and hope."

Stop blaming your attitude for a life that certain people keep making harder. I’m serious. Sometimes you don’t need another gratitude journal, inspirational quote, or lecture about choosing happiness. You need to stop giving emotionally destructive people front-row seats to your life and then wondering why you’re exhausted. I know because I’ve done it. I’ve mistaken loyalty for obligation, patience for endurance, and being a “good person” for tolerating behavior that was slowly wearing me down. We can dress it up however we want—history, friendship, family, love, forgiveness—but none of those words magically make an unhealthy relationship healthy. If you consistently walk away from someone feeling smaller, guilty, anxious, confused, or drained, maybe it’s time to stop asking what’s wrong with you and start asking what the hell is happening in the relationship. That may sting. Good. Sometimes the truth needs to.

I’m not saying everyone who frustrates me needs to be cut out of my life. That would be ridiculous. I frustrate people, too. I can be stubborn. I can get defensive. I’ve had bad days and said things I wish I could pull back into my mouth. Human beings are messy. The issue is what happens repeatedly. There’s a difference between someone having a bad moment and someone making you feel bad about yourself as a way of life. Between honesty and cruelty. Accountability and humiliation. Supporting someone through a hard season and becoming their permanent emotional dumping ground. I want people around me who challenge me without diminishing me, disagree without punishing me, and tell me the truth without making me pay for hearing it. I want laughter that doesn’t require a victim. Relationships where I can breathe. I’ve finally accepted something I should have understood much earlier: I can love somebody without giving them unlimited access to me. I can forgive without forgetting the lesson. I can wish someone well—and still walk the other direction.

Now I ask myself a question that doesn’t always give me the answer I want: Who am I becoming because of the people I keep close? Not how long I’ve known them. Not how much history we share. Who am I becoming? More peaceful or more defensive? More confident or constantly second-guessing myself? More generous or increasingly bitter? More myself—or less? The people closest to us eventually become part of our internal soundtrack. Their cynicism can become ours. Their chaos can start feeling normal. But so can kindness. So can courage, laughter, curiosity, honesty, and hope. I don’t want to spend my life becoming smaller just to make someone else comfortable. I want people around me who make it easier to tell the truth, laugh at the absurdity of being alive, recover when life knocks us down, and keep moving forward. And I want to offer that same gift in return. Choose your people carefully. Your peace is not indestructible—and neither are you.

Have a wonderfully positive day! ☀️
