I used to think being positive meant refusing to give too much attention to the negative. Keep moving. Look for the good. Don’t let somebody else’s ugliness become your own. There’s truth in that, but only up to a point. Because if I’m not careful, positivity can become a comfortable hiding place—a bright little room where I can feel good about myself without looking too closely at what’s happening outside the door. I don’t want that anymore. I want the kind of positivity that can stare directly at something uncomfortable and still choose hope. The kind that notices who is being talked over, who is standing alone, who keeps getting overlooked, and doesn’t immediately decide that somebody else will handle it. Sometimes kindness is a smile. Sometimes it’s an open chair. And sometimes, inconveniently, it’s saying, “No. That isn’t right.” Silence might keep the peace, but it doesn’t necessarily make the peace fair.

Fairness begins long before the big conversations. It lives in the little ones—in whether I listen or interrupt, make room or take over, assume I know somebody’s story or have enough humility to admit that I don’t. And this is where things get uncomfortable, because I can have good intentions and still have blind spots. So can you. Good intentions are wonderful, but they aren’t a hall pass. I can hurt someone without meaning to. I can miss something obvious simply because I’ve never had to notice it before. When that happens, I have a choice: defend myself until everyone is exhausted, or shut up for a minute and learn. I’m trying to choose the second one. Not perfectly. Probably never perfectly. I’ve grown suspicious of perfection anyway. It makes a lousy teacher. Mistakes, awkward conversations, and the occasional realization that I was completely wrong have taught me far more about being human than any inspirational quote ever did.

So today, I’m keeping the assignment simple: ***take one step toward fairness and inclusivity.*** Not someday. Today. Invite someone in. Listen to a perspective I might normally dismiss. Give credit without needing my name attached to it. Speak up when somebody is being treated badly, even if my voice shakes a little when I do it. One step. That’s all. We make change sound so enormous that ordinary people convince themselves they have nothing meaningful to contribute, when most of life is changed in increments so small we barely recognize them while they’re happening. Someone feels seen. Someone feels welcome. A door that was always closed gets held open. Maybe it seems insignificant. Do it anyway. Because positivity isn’t pretending the world is already good enough. It’s refusing to become indifferent to the parts that aren’t. ***Small actions create meaningful impact.*** And if I want a kinder world, I have to be willing to leave fingerprints on it.

Have a wonderfully positive day! ☀️
