- Description: I don't want to become so serious about becoming a better person that I forget to actually be a person. Life is hard enough. I want more ridiculous conversations, unexpected laughter, long dinners, and memories that don't need to accomplish anything.

So here we are. Day 4\. Gratitude, kindness, curiosity—and now laughter. If you've followed along, you probably already know where I'm going with this, but I think laughter deserves its own place because it is easy to underestimate. We talk about gratitude as though it's important. Kindness, obviously. Curiosity gets its share of attention from people who like books and interesting conversations. Laughter, though? We tend to treat it like dessert. Nice to have. Not essential. I disagree. I think laughter is one of the ways we survive being human. Not the fake kind. Not laughing off pain because we're uncomfortable with it. Some things hurt too much for that, and pretending otherwise isn't brave. It's just dishonest. I'm talking about the unexpected laugh in the middle of a hard season. The ridiculous thing that happens when absolutely nothing is going according to plan. The friend who can make you laugh when you were certain you couldn't. The inside joke that has somehow survived ten years and still makes no sense to anyone else. Those moments don't erase the hard stuff. They give us somewhere to breathe.

Some of my favorite memories aren't particularly impressive when I describe them. There was no great achievement attached to them. Nobody received an award. There wasn't a photographer standing nearby to capture the moment for posterity. It was just people being people. Somebody said something stupid. Somebody laughed too hard. A story went completely off the rails. A road trip took an unexpected turn. Dinner lasted way longer than it should have because nobody wanted to get up. Someone made a terrible decision that was probably questionable at the time and absolutely hilarious in retrospect. Those are the memories that stay. I want more of them. I don't want every hour of my life optimized for productivity. I don't want every conversation to have an objective. I don't want every weekend planned down to the last fifteen-minute increment. Sometimes I want to sit at a table with people I love and accomplish absolutely nothing. Talk. Eat. Laugh. Tell stories we've already heard. Tell them badly again. Stay too late. Those aren't wasted hours. Those might be the hours that matter most.

And I think growing older can make us forget how to play. We get responsibilities. Mortgages, careers, schedules, family obligations, appointments, things that need fixing, things that need paying, things that apparently needed to be done yesterday. Somewhere in the middle of all that, seriousness starts masquerading as maturity. We assume being grown-up means becoming increasingly solemn. I don't buy it. Responsibility matters. So does joy. I can take my life seriously without taking myself seriously every minute of the day. I can be responsible and still dance badly in the kitchen. I can make an awful joke. I can laugh at my own mistakes. I can let a conversation wander somewhere completely useless simply because it's fun to be there. I can be ridiculous with people I trust. Maybe especially with them. Growing older doesn't have to mean becoming heavier. There is a time to be serious. Absolutely. There is also a time to put down the clipboard, stop trying to solve everything, and laugh at the sheer absurdity of being alive.

And that's where the four come together for me. Gratitude makes me notice. Kindness reminds me how I want to treat people. Curiosity keeps me from deciding I've figured everybody out. Laughter keeps me from turning all of it into a checklist for becoming some perfectly evolved human being—which, let's be honest, sounds exhausting. I am not going to master these four. I'll forget. I'll mess up. I'll be impatient. I'll make assumptions. I'll occasionally complain about something completely ridiculous and realize later that I should have been grateful instead. That's life. But I want these four things nearby, almost like signposts. Gratitude. Kindness. Curiosity. Laughter. I want them in the way I speak to the people I love. I want them in my friendships. I want them around the dinner table, on a trail, in the car, during difficult conversations, and in the ordinary Tuesday moments nobody thinks to photograph. I don't need a perfect life. I don't even particularly want one. Perfect sounds sterile. I want a full one. A life where people know they are loved. A life where friends feel appreciated. A life where I remain curious enough to keep learning, kind enough to keep giving, grateful enough to keep noticing, and foolish enough to laugh when life gets weird. And it will. Life always does.
