- Description: “The things we bury do not always remain underground. A betrayal may grow into suspicion. Abandonment may become distance. Fear may disguise itself as wisdom. Healing begins when we stop pretending the wound isn't there.”

There are people who have become fluent in the language of appearing whole. They know how to laugh with a crack running quietly through the middle of them. They stay busy. They answer messages. They remember birthdays, pour another cup of coffee, ask everyone else how they are doing. Then someone asks the question back, almost as an afterthought—"How are you?"—and out comes the familiar little lie: “I’m fine.” Sometimes the lie is necessary for the afternoon. It is not a very good way to live. The things we bury do not always remain underground. They find roots. A betrayal may grow into suspicion. Abandonment may flower into distance. Fear, clever thing that it is, may begin wearing the clothes of wisdom. And one day a person realizes they have been building walls around a house whose fire went out years ago. Covered is not healed. Buried things still bleed. The body remembers what the mouth refuses to say.

Perhaps this is why genuine positivity has so little to do with constant happiness. Happiness is lovely, but it is a poor bandage. I feel that real positivity asks for something far less glamorous: honesty. The courage to sit beside the hurt without immediately dressing it up as a lesson. Not every loss was “meant to happen.” Not every goodbye contains a hidden gift. Some things simply hurt. Some people leave without giving the heart the explanation it spent months inventing. Some doors close with no music playing in the background, no neat little revelation waiting on the other side. Healing begins anyway. Quietly, sometimes almost imperceptibly. A person cries in the car and keeps driving. Takes the walk. Says the prayer. Makes the appointment. Finally tells the truth. Learns that forgiveness can be freedom without becoming permission. Learns, too, that a scar does not have to be ashamed of having once been an open wound. The past can be honored without being allowed to hold the pen.

And there is one lesson that deserves to be spoken plainly, because kindness without honesty is only another form of avoidance: heal your heart before someone else has to heal from you. Pain may explain the sharp edges, but eventually those edges can cut people who never held the knife. A frightened heart can turn love into an interrogation. A betrayed person can punish the faithful. Someone abandoned long ago can leave first, just to make sure nobody gets the chance to leave them. None of this makes a person unworthy of love. It makes the work of healing unavoidable. What happened may not have been their fault. What they carry forward is their responsibility. So feel the grief. Let it have its weather. Let anger speak, but do not give it the keys. Put down the armor when the war is over, even if the hands tremble while doing it. And when kindness becomes possible again—not the performative kind, not the easy kind, but the kind that survives disappointment—choose it. Choose it deliberately. Because perhaps staying positive was never about finding a way to avoid the darkness. Perhaps it was always about walking through it without becoming it.

Have a wonderfully positive day! ☀️
